“For mercy’s sake! Why doesn’t she ever respond to my flame calls?!”

In the room assigned to “Kou Reirin” somewhere in the township magistrate’s estate, Keigetsu was staring down a candle and biting her nails in frustration. It was the second night since “Shu Keigetsu” had been abducted. She still hadn’t verified whether her friend was safe, let alone discussed how to undo the swap, and the suspense was driving her crazy.

“The times you’re around a fire aren’t matching up, that’s all. She has Master Keikou with her, so I don’t think she’s in any danger,” Leelee said as she peered into the candle from beside her, sounding like she was trying to convince herself of the same.

Keigetsu clicked her tongue and glared at Leelee. “If Lord Keishou’s words are to be believed, she becomes three times as much of a handful when she’s around him. Not even double for the two of them. Three times!”

“…”

Keigetsu’s apprehension only grew when Leelee lapsed into silence.

Ever since the pre-celebration had been cut short two nights ago, a palpable air of tension had settled over the township. Under normal circumstances, the Maidens were supposed to spend their time freely until the main event, seeing the local sights or chatting with the townspeople over tea, but no one was in the mood for that anymore. Thus, the girls had spent the entire time holed up in their rooms, anxiously awaiting some sort of news.

The suspense was weighing more heavily on Keigetsu’s mind than anyone else’s. Even if she had gone along with the men for her own purposes, was Reirin really safe? Surely she had to be all right if Keikou was there, but what if the two of them were stirring up trouble for those bandits?

Honestly, that’s the part I’m more worried about!

Kou Reirin was a girl gutsy enough to stand in the face of adversity and leave that adversity begging for mercy. Keigetsu was concerned that her friend was out there devastating total strangers with her face and, for that matter, that she might get swept up in some new, unforeseen crisis as a consequence of getting too carried away.

She’d already gotten a little too giddy at the prospect of her first-ever trip.

I’m not even married, so why do I feel like a mother worried about her kid running out of control? Realizing what she sounded like, Keigetsu silently rubbed her temples.

There was something she’d learned since getting to know Kou Reirin better: The girl wasn’t a butterfly who danced about stealing people’s hearts. No, she had elements of that too—but her true nature was more like that of a raging boar. She was powerful, fearless, and unstoppable. She was straightforward and single-minded in all things, whether it came to expressing her affections or fleeing a scene.

“Running off with a bunch of bandits because someone said to get out of there? How stupid can one person be?” Keigetsu groused, massaging her forehead as she felt a headache coming on. On the other hand, there was some part of her that found the stunt endearing.
